In 2012, a group of Western Australian volunteers banded together to create a new event that would raise awareness and funds for JDRF and type 1 diabetes. Now in its 6th year, Race for Research Melbourne Cup luncheon continues to be one of the most successful volunteer-led fundraising events supporting JDRF and type 1 diabetes (T1D) in Western Australia.
Current Chair, Toni Ralston shares, “The annual event is Perth’s BEST all-inclusive Race Day event – known for the bubbles and wine that flow throughout, the gorgeous meal and all whilst enjoying the beautiful view of our city. Over the last five years, over $100,000 has been raised for JDRF and we look to continue our success in 2017.”
JDRF volunteer and event founder, Cathryn Urquart, says, “It is just about having lots of fun and the fundraising side of things happens naturally. We look forward to guests coming along, beautifully dressed to help us raise money towards research to support people with type 1 diabetes.”
Ms Ralston shares that the success of the event is down to the support of the WA business community. “What attendees might not know is that all of the bubbles and wine, as well as auction and raffle items are donated. This allows for more funds to go to JDRF direct.”
Ms Ralston highlights long-time supporter, Keiko Uno Jewellery, the 2017 Major Raffle Partner. Since the inaugural event, designer and managing director, Keiko Uno, has been motivated to support JDRF after she learned of the life-changing challenges faced by parents of young children with T1D when her friend’s son was diagnosed.
This year, Keiko Uno Jewellery will create and donate a bespoke ‘Race for Research’ statement neckpiece for the major raffle. The jewel will incorporate the deep purple, black and gold colours of the Race for Research branding to customise a neckpiece that Keiko Uno originally designed for seven-time world surfing champion, Layne Beachley AO.
Race for Research is honoured to have the support of Keiko Uno Jewellery, a brand that is internationally celebrated for its luxury ocean motif designs, and loved and worn by inspirational women including Her Excellency Kerry Sanderson AC, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, and TV presenters Lisa Wilkinson and Susana Carr.
Ms Ralston says support like Keiko Uno Jewellery is so important towards the success on the day. Last year, with Keiko Uno Jewellery‘s donation, the raffle raised more than $12,000.
This year the event will take place at Perth’s newest venue, Ambrose Estate, in Wembley Downs. Situated on 300 acres of parkland and with the Perth skyline in the background, the photos will be outstanding!
